Children’s Chorale “Simply Classic Winter Concert” ReviewAmidst all the holiday festivities and programs, the Pueblo Children’s Chorale can be seen performing
all over town. One of their programs during this busy season was their annual Christmas concert. This
year’s “Simply Classic Winter Concert” featured some special guests and some traditional as well as
modern Christmas classics.
I was excited immediately upon entering Hoag Hall by the large audience and the fun and well-
done Christmas decorations on stage. The concert began with the impeccably dressed and well-behaved
Children’s Chorale Concert Choir. Their opening number, “Something Told the Wild Geese” included
some really nice harmonies, and the “Star Carol” showed off the Chorale’s nice soprano tone.
The first guest artists were the Children’s Chorale Alumni Ensemble (also members of the “Upon
a Star Carolers”). Their Victorian style costumes were really cute and all the students had very nice
voices. There was some trouble with microphones, and that did make it hard to hear the group at times.
The Okolitza Tamburitzans were the featured guest artists. They appeared in beautiful Croatian
folk costumes, with an all age group. The tiniest Tamburitzans couldn’t have been more than 4 or 5, and
were absolutely adorable. The group played and sang some of their standard numbers- their Theme
Song, the “Theme from Dr. Zhivago,” among others- and their instrumental playing was by far the best
part of their performance. The version of Silent Night in Croatian was a little quiet, but very pretty. I was
a little disappointed that the group didn’t do any of their folk dances (something they do very well),
however, they still delivered a nice performance.
For the final set, the Children’s Chorale Concert Choir was back again for a Carol Medley that had
some nice acapella moments. My favorite part of the concert was the final number that featured both
the Children’s Chorale and Alumni Ensemble called “Shalom.” The mix of voices was beautiful. If you
haven’t see a Children’s Choral Concert, I highly recommend checking them out on May 7th for their next
major concert. Visit their website at www.pueblochildrenschorale.org for more info.
