Local Book Signings for Mining Towns of Southern Colorado

New to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Mining Towns of Southern Colorado by local authors Staci Comden, Victoria Miller and Sara Szakaly. This pictorial history boasts more than 200 vintage images and provides readers with a unique opportunity to reconnect with the history that shaped their community.

Lesser known than the gold and silver mines of Western lore, Southern Colorado's extensive coal mines fueled the engines for Western industrialization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of the numerous companies operating the mines, the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) was king.

With a total of 62 mines, the majority of them in Colorado's Las Animas, Huerfano and Fremont Counties, CF&I ruled the lives of countless miners in company towns scattered throughout Southern Colorado. Working long hours often in cramped underground caverns, the workers emerged to families living in lonely mountain landscapes completely provisioned with company homes, stores, schools and churches.

Pueblo's First Friday Art Walk

The Pueblo Creative Corridor’s First Friday Art Walk gets a lift with the VanGO Art Shuttle at 5 to 8 p.m. on June 7. The VanGO is a free shuttle that travels around the Creative Corridor loop and is available every 20 minutes. The Pueblo Chamber of Commerce is the sponsor of the shuttle and is offering a step-on, step-off ride with 17 stops along a loop route of the one mile stretch of the Creative Corridor. Find a parking spot at the El Pueblo History Museum, Sangre de Cristo Arts Center or Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library and hop on the VanGO to easily visit the artists and this summer’s Street Beat Arts Festivities performers. Pueblo’s First Friday Art Walk offers visitors more than paintings, photography, fiber arts, sculpture, glass and pottery. Many galleries and shops have special demonstrations of “live art activities.” As with all Art Walks, there will be newly hung shows, refreshments and live music and entertainment. All activities associated with Pueblo’s First Friday Art Walk are free.

There will be an opening reception for “F-Stop: Photographic Works of Pueblo by Linda Cates,” on Thursday, June 6, 5 p.m., at the Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library, Second Floor, Hispanic Resource Center.

Cates has won awards for her work judged at various art shows, as well as the Colorado State Fair. Her work has also been displayed at libraries, galleries, restaurants and other businesses. She is a member of the Southern Colorado Photography Society and the Pueblo Art Guild and former Board member of the Guild.
